2 Days Hadzabe & Datoga Tribe visit

Overview

Join us on an exciting journey through time to the last hunter-gatherers in East Africa, the Hadzabe. During your visit, you have the opportunity to participate in hunting in the bush, an unforgettable and authentic experience. We also visit their neighbours at Lake Eyasi, the Datoga – skilled blacksmiths, who make everyday objects out of scrap metal, for example arrowheads and knives for the Hadzabe.

Before we visit the Hadzabe and Datoga at Lake Eyasi, the first day of the safari takes you to the Tarangire National Park. The park is home to the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania and impresses with its great scenery and giant baobab trees.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arusha – Tarangire National Park – Karatu

After breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel and together with your guide you drive to Tarangire National Park.

The national park, which emerged from a colonial hunting reserve in 1970, is still very original and has a varied wildlife. The heart of the park, which has roughly the size of Luxembourg, is the Tarangire River. Sometimes many elephants can be seen here. You can also observe many other species of animals in the park, such as giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, impalas, grant gazelles, warthogs or baboons. With some luck you will spot lions, cheetahs or leopards. The park has a very diverse landscape and also impresses with its giant baobab trees, in the surroundings mostly many animals can be found.

After a long game drive you continue to the small town of Karatu, which lies on the outer edge of the Ngorongoro Crater. Here you will stay overnight in a simple but cozy lodge. You should go to bed early, because you leave  for Lake Eyasi shortly after sunrise.

Day 2 Karatu – Lake Eyasi – Arusha

After an early breakfast (around 6.30 am) you will drive to Lake Eyasi, the journey takes just over an hour.

The Hadzabe Bushmen are the last true hunter-gatherers in East Africa, around the lake live about 700-800 tribesmen in small groups. The Hadzabe live almost the same way as our own ancestors in the Stone Age. They hunt animals with bow and arrow and collect fruits, roots and honey from the baobab trees. After a welcome and an insight into the village life, it goes with some men on a common hunting. The hunt takes place at a fairly fast pace, especially when an animal is spotted. The Hadzabe hunt antelopes and gazelles, but also smaller animals such as birds or mongooses.

In the late morning you will visit then the Datoga tribe. These pastoralists are also skilled blacksmiths. They collect metal scrap, which they cleverly process into bracelets, arrowheads and knives. You also have the opportunity to visit one of the huts in the village. Here you can watch the women how they grind flour from corn, from which later bread is baked.

In the early afternoon you will return to Arusha. On the way back you can enjoy the impressions of your safari and the unique visit to the Hadzabe Bushmen and Datoga.
